Cuba wins 11 medals at the Special Olympics

Havana, March 29 (RHC)- Cuba participated in the Special Olympics, held for the first time by a Middle Eastern nation, the United Arab Emirates, with a delegation of eight athletes.

The delegation won three gold, five silver and three bronze medals, in an impressive performance.

Weightlifter Yaritza Parrado kick started Cuba’s winning streak with two gold medals and the same number of silver. Meanwhile long-jumper Irina Lopez, also won gold with a leap of 4.40 meters, followed by silver medal winner Mandy Mojena, who excelled in the 800 meters.

Also contributing to the outstanding performance were Yuly Esther Ortega and Roberto Fernández in athletics; swimmers Yurisnel Rojas and Katiuska Patiño, both from Las Tunas, and weightlifter Yoandy Beltrán.
