Hurricane Ida damages 21 sports centers in Cuba

Havana, August 31 (RHC/JIT) -- The damages caused by Hurricane Ida to Cuban sports institutions are concentrated in the provinces of Pinar del Río and Artemisa, and in the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

This was reported today to JIT by the area of defense and civil defense of the Inder-Central Agency, after compiling all the information received from the territories.

A total of 21 entities of the sector were affected by the strong winds and the rains associated with the meteor, among which sports facilities and baseball and soccer stadiums are predominant.

The main damages have to do with the loss of light zinc, fiber cement and asbestos cement roofs, in a number close to 600, especially in the Pinar del Río and Pinar del Río regions.

On the Isle of Youth, Ida damaged the roofs of the canoeing academy and the Cristóbal Labra Stadium (batting cage), as well as windows and glass in the Eide Fladio Álvarez.

In the westernmost of the territories, the cyclone's fury mainly hit the Camilo Cienfuegos (La Palma) and Rolando Collado (Los Palacios) stadiums, knocking down 200 and 50 roof tiles, respectively. In Artemisa, the damage was concentrated in facilities in the municipality of Candelaria.

According to Inder-OC officials, during the recovery tasks, priority has been given to the cleaning and collection of debris and garbage, as well as the preservation of resources prone to damage. The goal is to solve the damages in the shortest possible time, despite the existing limitations.

Ida crossed the western end of our country on Friday with category one on the Saffir-Simpson scale. In its path it left intense rains and winds, mainly.
