UN Secretary-General António Guterres travelled to Beijing on Wednesday to attend the opening of the Winter Olympic Games

Havana, February 2 (RHC)-- UN Secretary-General António Guterres travelled to Beijing on Wednesday to attend the opening of the Winter Olympic Games, according to his deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq.

In addition, during his stay in the Chinese capital, Guterres will meet with the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, and authorities of the Asian giant, the spokesman said.

According to the planned agenda, Guterres will participate in the opening of the games on Friday and will return to New York on Sunday.

This Wednesday, the torch of the Beijing-2022 Winter Olympic Games began its journey through the arteries of the Chinese capital, in a two-day journey that will be shorter than usual and mostly without spectators due to the worsening of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The torch's journey will conclude on Friday after being carried by 1,200 people through many emblematic areas of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, the three places that will host the competitions.

Beijing-2022 is counting down and -under the slogan "Together for a Shared Future"- in two days will showcase what it promised to be the best show on ice and snow ever held, with more sports and better-prepared athletes.

In addition, the Chinese capital will become the only one on the planet to host both variants of the five-ring event, after hosting the summer version in 2008.

With almost 3,000 athletes participating in the different sports disciplines, the Winter Olympic Games will be held from February 4 to 20, while the Paralympic Games will take place from March 4 to 13.
