Granma-Cerro Pelado de Lucha International Wrestling Trornament cancelled, new commissioner is appointed

Havana, February 18 (RHC/JIT)-- The Granma-Cerro Pelado 2022 International Wrestling Tournament has been canceled due to the low level of inscriptions, according authorities of that sport on the island.

The directors of the sport on the island also announced the appointment of a new national commissioner.

"All possible steps were taken to guarantee the presence of traditional American and European squads in the competition, but the impact of the covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the preparation and mobility of the wrestlers," the Cuban Wrestling Federation said in a note sent to the media.

It added that "under these circumstances, our main gladiators will continue their preparation for the national and Pan American championships of the season, with an eye on the world competition to be held in Belgrade, next September".

We also take this opportunity to inform that Martin Torres Peguero has been appointed as the new national wrestling commissioner, replacing Luis de la Portilla.

Torres was an athlete and member of the provincial commission of this sport in Pinar del Río. He worked at the Faculty of Physical Culture of the University of Pinar del Río, where he became its dean. He also served as head of the Cuban sports mission in Ecuador between 2013 and 2016, said the governing body of wrestling in Cuba.
