Portugal advances to Qatar World Cup round of 16

Havana, November28 (RHC)-- With a great collective game, Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 today to reach the round of 16 of the Qatar 2022 soccer World Cup in Group H.

Two goals by Bruno Fernandes in the 54th minute and stoppage time (90+3), the second after review by the video assistant referee (VAR), gave the Lusitanians their second win of the tournament after debuting with a 3-2 success against the Ghanaians.

After an even first half with more control and danger for the Portuguese, the first goal for the Europeans came with a cross from Fernandes that Cristiano Ronaldo failed to head in, but it put goalkeeper Sergio Rochet out of position.

In additional time, a handball by Uruguay's José María Giménez, which was noticed by the VAR, sentenced the South Americans.

The Portuguese took revenge for the setback suffered in the round of 16 of Russia 2018, taking advantage of their options and proposing more than their opponents.

The two-time world champions opted for a conservative style of soccer from the start, with a five-man defense, which tried to control the offense of Fernando Santos' men.

However, they barely reached Diogo Costa's area, with very little from Federico Valverde, Darwin Núñez and Edinson Cavani.

Uruguay, who drew their opening match goalless against South Korea, were left on the brink of the abyss as they were unable to react against the strong Portuguese defense.
