Havana, May 20 (RHC) -- Roxana Gomez, Olympic finalist in Tokyo 2020, was among the winners of the gold medal at the opening of the 2023 Cuba Cup of athletics; a competition that, as is traditional, is held at the Pan American Stadium, in this capital.

Gómez, a member of the quartet that won the 4x400 meters flat (m/p) title at the World Relay Championship, held in Poland two years ago, won this Friday in the oval lap with a time of 51.56 seconds (s).

Behind her came Lisneidy Veitía (52.96 s) and Tracy Joseph (53.78 s), from Costa Rica, in second and third place, respectively.

I felt good in the race and that is the most important thing for me, little by little I found the rhythm I wanted and managed to win, which was the goal, the winner of the 400m/p final told the press.

She also referred to her goals for the current year, loaded with international commitments such as the world meet in Budapest, Hungary, in August, and the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, to be held from June 23 to July 8.

In this regard, she said that the season will be quite long, so she will go step by step, first with her sights set on the Central Caribbean Games, then on the World Track and Field Championship and the closing will be the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, which will begin on October 20.

She expressed that she and her teammates will prepare as best as possible to take on the individual races, in addition to the women's and mixed relays, modalities in which they can obtain good results even at the highest level, as happened in Poland in 2021, she said.

Also on Friday, Yoandys Lescay dominated the men's 400 m/p with a time of 46.31 seconds, escorted by Leonardo Castillo (47.18 seconds) and Alex Rendón (47.49 seconds), who were second and third, in that order.

Meanwhile, Adriana Rodríguez, champion of the Lima 2019 multisport event in the heptathlon, won the crown in the long jump with a mark of 6.58 meters.
