FIFA president laments tragedy at a stadium in El Salvador

El Salvador Stampede

Geneva, Switzerland, May 22 (PL) - The president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, expressed his condolences for the 12 people killed in a stampede that occurred Saturday in a stadium in El Salvador.

"I would like to convey my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who have lost their lives in the tragic incidents that took place in El Salvador," the Italian-Swiss official said in a statement.

According to the latest count by the National Civil Police, the number of people killed in the stampede that occurred at the Estadio Monumental de Cuscatlán, before a match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS, has risen to 12.

In addition to the dead, several fans were injured, at least two of them in critical condition, added the Salvadoran police force.

We accompany all those affected, as well as the people of the Republic of El Salvador, the Salvadoran Soccer Federation and the First Division of Soccer of El Salvador in these difficult moments," added Infantino.
