Havana, April 3 (JIT) -- The Cuban national team achieved today its first victory (7x6) against the US Virgin Islands in the U-18 Women's Pan American Softball Championship of Montería 2024, in Colombia.

Although they won, the Cuban team missed out on one of the five berths for the upcoming world championship of the category.

Yuni Gonzalez's students have a balance of one win and three losses in group C. After losing to Venezuela by no-show and by knockouts against Brazil and Puerto Rico, they depended on other results to advance.

Luck was not with them because today Canada defeated Brazil 5x3 and they can no longer be included in the top three of the group.

In the game against the Virgin Islands, Yumilka Elías, 5-3 with one run batted in and two runs scored, was the standout hitter. She has the best offensive average of the team (.375).

Leidi Diana García, who pitched the seven innings at a rate of seven hits, four strikeouts and no walks, won the game. Cuba has a bye on Wednesday against top-seeded Canada.

The Cubans also failed to get one of the six tickets for the II Junior Pan American Games of Asuncion 2025.
