Las Tunas, Jun 4 (RHC) Today, the Tigres de Ciego de Avila defeated the Leñadores de Las Tunas 6-4 on the grass of the Julio Antonio Mella stadium and were proclaimed champions of the III Elite League of Cuban Baseball.
The team led by Danny Miranda completed the sweep in four challenges and took the crown of this third edition as did Agricultores and Cocodrilos de Matanzas.
Against all odds, the Avileños, bled by several important absences, led the qualifying stage, beat Industriales de La Habana in the semifinals and completed their feat against the best Cuban team in recent years.
This afternoon, Yordanis Samón, in front of the defeated Jesús Enrique Pérez, gave the clarion call by hitting a double and a single in the first third of the game to bring in the two runs that opened the scoreboard for his Tigres.
Rodolexis Moreno and Ronaldo Castillo hit in the fourth and sixth acts, to drive in two more -on the account of reliever Albert Valladares- and extinguish the hopes of their opponents a little more.
With Yanielquis Duardo in the lead, Tailon Sanchez hit a go-ahead run in the seventh and Dennis Laza, in the ninth, homered for the fourth consecutive day to close out the afternoon's production and allow his team to begin to reach for the trophy.
Alex Guerra scored the historic win, even though he had a hard time on the mound. The left-hander from Sancti Spíritus walked a route of five episodes and one third, where he struck out two batters, accepted seven hits and two dirty runs.
Rescuing Yomil González got six outs and allowed another two runs due to errors (four committed by the hosts), but Leonardo Moreira put his arm in and finished off five opponents to put an end to the story.
