Dozens arrested in new protests in Chile

Santiago de Chile, March 14 (RHC)-- In the midst of the media effects of the removal of the statue of General Manuel Baquedano in the square that bears his name, renamed Plaza Dignidad by the protesters since eighteen months ago, a new protest took place this Friday which resulted in at least 62 people arrested.

The day was marked by disorder and clashes between Carabineros (Chilean Police) and protesters, after the uniformed police showed up with a large contingent, with which they took over the Plaza Baquedano sector, from where the monument to the general of the same name was removed.

These demonstrations, which take place every Friday in the renamed Plaza Dignidad, lead to disorder and incidents between some people and the police, which spread to the surrounding streets and areas, such as the Lastarria neighborhood, Bellas Artes and Parque Forestal.

The balance of the day, according to the report of the uniformed police, is 62 arrested for disorder on public roads and 13 carabineros officers injured.

The demonstrators recalled this week the year and a half since the beginning of the protests, in which, they claim that issues that are essential for them have not changed, such as: the resignation of Piñera as head of state, the existence of political prisoners, the dead of the CPVID-19 pandemic, the dead and mutilated by state repression, among other demands.

Next April 11, Chileans will elect assembly members for a constituent convention which must draft a Constitution that puts an end to the cartamagna inherited from Pinochet's tyranny and which has been one of the main demands of the citizenry in the demonstrations.
