Guatemala City, August 5 (RHC)-- More than 20 Guatemalan social and indigenous organizations have called for mobilizations on August 9th and 11th against corruption, the high cost of living and in defense of democracy.

On behalf of the Committee of Peasant Unity, Daniel Pascual, detailed other problems faced by the population in Guatemala and for which they also made the call, such as the increase in the basic food basket, the situation of peasant wages and poverty.

During a news conference in Guatemala City, the social organizations said that the demonstrations will be propitious to express the "rejection to the Government of (Alejandro) Giammattei, for the defense of the democratic space, the right of the indigenous and peasant peoples and for a political alliance."

"We are witnessing the closing of a cycle of the strategy of the Pact of Corrupts, because we already knew that they were controlling the State, headed by Giammattei and a majority in Congress," said Pascual.

Representatives of the convening sectors also added that they will demonstrate their discontent with the arrest of several workers of the media El Periódico, including its president, José Rubén Zamora.  "The message is key and direct, to silence and violate the right of expression and broadcasting of thought, because the indigenous and peasant peoples have always been under permanent repression," said Pascual.

According to the spokespersons, the protests on August 9th will take place in various regions of the country, while on August 11th they are expected to concentrate in the capital, Guatemala City.
