Guatemala City, Sep 2 (RHC) Social organizations, collectives and students will march this Saturday in Guatemala in defense of democracy, against corruption, to support the popular will expressed at the polls and prevent a coup d'état.

They called for 12:00, local time, from the capital's sixth avenue and 18th street to the Central Plaza, after denouncing those who refuse to accept the results of the elections, as well as the call for unity of the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo.

Journalists for Democracy, the Santa Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Huelga de Dolores of the Universidad de San Carlos, the Frente Ciudadano por la Democracia, Justicia Ya, the political movement Codeca, among others, asked to wear black, "for the death of corruption".

Yesterday we voted, today we march and defend our decision, they pointed out in one of the messages, and a second text indicated "they can cut all the flowers but they cannot stop the spring", a phrase of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

Two hours later, the central park La Paz of Coban, capital city of Alta Verapaz department, will host a rally called United for Democracy. For 08:00 on Monday Santa Cruz del Quiché will gather demonstrators with the slogan Que renuncien, and simultaneously a sit-in is planned in front of the headquarters of the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) throughout the country.Days before Arevalo's call, the former presidential candidate for the Podemos party, Roberto Arzú, invited all Guatemalans through social networks to join at 14:00 this Saturday in the Central Park, in front of the Palace.

In demand of "the resignation of all these corrupt, starting with the most corrupt president in history, Alejandro Giammattei, and that they end now, because if they did not want to leave democratically with the vote of power we kicked them out", he stressed.

A dictatorship cannot be allowed to end what has cost so much t, said the son of the president of Guatemala (1996-2000) and five times mayor of the capital, Álvaro Arzú.He said he expects that a million Guatemalans will come to protest, but if it is only him, it does not matter, he will do it and will persist the following Saturdays until he defeats the "corrupt pact".The former candidate considered that there are risks and consequences, but stated that it is a moment when the country is calling to take that step forward.

This week, at the request of the MP, the Registrar of Citizens of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Ramiro Muñoz, complied with a judge's order to suspend the legal personality of the Semilla Movement party.

The Board of Directors of the Congress decided to disregard the Semilla bench and declared it independent, in view of alleged anomalies in the constitution of that political force in 2018, which fueled the tension. (Source: Prensa Latina).
