Arab League calls for an end to fights in Sudan

Cairo, Apr 16 (RHC) The General Secretary of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, today demanded an end to the clashes between the Sudanese Army and a paramilitary militia, which threatens to start a civil war in that African nation.

In a statement, the officer condemned the clashes that broke out on Saturday, especially during Ramadan, a holy month for Muslims.

Aboul Gheit expressed his concern and shock after the outbreak of clashes in Khartoum and other areas of the nation.

He said that, in the conflict zones, the warring factions have the responsibility to ensure the safety of Sudanese civilians.

He also announced that the Arab League is prepared to intervene on both sides to seek a negotiated solution.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry made a similar statement, urging the uniformed forces on both parties to exercise maximum restraint to ‘protect the lives and capabilities of the Sudanese people’.

The Rapid Support Forces, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, announced that they were in control of several key sites in the country, including the Presidential Palace and Khartoum airport, following an offensive against the Armed Forces, led by General Abdel Fatah al Burhan, de facto leader of Sudan.
