El Aaiún, May 21 (RHC)--  The Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia Hamra and Rio de Oro, also known as the Polisario Front (PF), celebrated on Saturday five decades of its creation and of having started the armed struggle to free Western Sahara from the tutelage of colonialism.

During a mass rally in the Saharawi camps in Tindouf, Algeria, the president of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Brahim Gali, stressed that the achievements of the people in the last 50 years were only possible through enormous sacrifices.  He expressed that from colonialism to the constitution of SADR there has been an immense radical transformation from poverty, backwardness and ignorance, towards an integrated state project.

He recalled that the Polisario Front prioritized the armed struggle as a firm and decisive response to, first, the intransigence and arrogance of the Spanish colonial power, and then to the contempt of the Moroccan monarchy for the legitimate claims of the Saharawi people.

He underlined that the armed option does not come from a vacuum, but from attempts to undermine the rights of his people, and that this type of struggle to win independence has existed since the very emergence of the organization.
