UN Committee singles out Uruguay for racial discrimination

Montevideo, Sept 1 (RHC) The UN Committee against the Elimination of Racial Discrimination urged the Uruguayan state to favor the recognition of Afro-descendant populations and indigenous peoples, according to a document published Thursday.

On the World Day for People of African Descent, the committee released an international report that in the case of Uruguay points out that these population groups experience evident racial discrimination, due to stereotypes and deep-rooted prejudices.

It points out that the history, culture and contributions of Afro-descendants and indigenous people are not adequately incorporated into the public education system, which perpetuates structural racism and racial stereotypes in Uruguayan society.

The committee considers it essential to launch awareness campaigns aimed at the general public, with the objective of highlighting the pernicious effects of racial discrimination.

In addition, it urged the design and implementation of educational initiatives that integrate the contributions of these populations in the construction of the national identity, incorporating them into school curricula.

It also called for state efforts to ensure access to education for all children, adolescents and young people belonging to these minorities.

It also expressed concern about the increase in racist hate speech and hate crimes in contexts such as sports, the media and the online sphere, as well as the lack of action against those responsible for such acts.

The committee called for a series of measures, including the creation of a database to record complaints, prosecutions and convictions for racially motivated hate speech and hate crimes, as well as the penalties imposed and reparations granted to victims. (Source:PL)
