Brussels, June 9 (RHC-PL)-- Trade unionists from around the world have called for an end to the U.S. economic blockade against Cuba during an event held at the European Parliament based in Brussels.

The demand was expressed in a resolution adopted at the end of the meeting, in which participants ratified the decision to continue supporting the Cuban people in their struggle against this economic, commercial and financial siege -- considered the main obstacle for the island's development.

The gathering, organized by European Parliamentarians of the Greek Communist Party and the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), also called for the return to Cuba of the territory occupied by the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo, which remains under Washington's control, against the will of the government and people of the Caribbean nation.

During the opening session, WFTU General Secretary, George Mavrikos, said that the blockade is barbaric, and defended the need to increase the struggle for its immediate lifting.

Cuban ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Norma Goicochea, expressed appreciation for the holding of the event and reaffirmed the irrevocable and unequivocal decision by the Cuban people to defend their independence and sovereignty.
