Havana, October 26 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel will hand over to Costa Rica this Monday the Economic Commission's pro tempore presidency for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

For the first time, due to the epidemiological situation, the 38th session of that body will be held virtually.

The island has held this position since the previous ECLAC forum held in Havana in May 2018.

The meeting will be attended by Costa Rican President Carlos Alvarado, United Nations Secretary-General António Gutérres, and ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment (Mincex), during its presidency, Cuba focused on three fundamental lines: advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, prioritizing the Caribbean, and strengthening South-South cooperation.

Recently, Alicia Bárcena highlighted Cuba's contribution to the region and to that organization.

"It has been an exceptional and excellent presidency, and it has been their turn to accompany us in the framework of this pandemic, showing the immediate reaction capacity required at times like these," she said in an interview to the Cubadebate site.
