Havana, May 24 (RHC)-- A spirit of solidarity in several countries of the world is collecting medical supplies to support the anti-COVID-19 vaccination drive underway in Cuba, in a humanitarian gesture and defiance of the blockade.

According to an article in Granma newspaper, the Italian-Cuban National Friendship Association asked citizens of goodwill to contribute with funds and obtained 800,000 euros to buy ten million syringes and needles, through MediCuba-Europe, according to a statement by the organization.

Something similar is happening in France through  Cuba Linda and France Cuba associations, which have raised 60,000 euros, equivalent to almost 750,000 syringes and needles. They plan to transfer to MediCuba Switzerland the first 15,000 euros and keep the fundraising campaign open until June 10.

Prensa Latina news agency reported that Nicaragua contributed 130,000 syringes. Two bank transfers totaling 4,479 dollars were made from that country to the organization of Cubans living in Panama for the purchase and shipment of the supplies.

Likewise, in Costa Rica, the Antonio Maceo Cultural Association of Cuban Residents and the Costa Rican organizations of solidarity with Cuba will collect sanitary resources. Cubans residing in Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Mexico will join the efforts.

In the United States, the organizations Codepink-Women for Peace, joined by the anti-blockade  Bridges of Love and NEMO groups, are also contributing.

Among all the initiatives, they intend to collect some 30 million syringes, contributing to the Ministry of Public Health's commitment to guarantee all the material resources to successfully carry out the vaccination of 100% of Cubans before the end of this year.
