Commander of the Revolution Juan Almeida Bosque

Havana, Feb 17 (RHC) President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday recalled the birthday of Juan Almeida Bosque.

On his Twitter account, the head of State wrote, “Today the man who shouted the rebel will in the first combat be turning 95: “No one will surrender”, the Chief of the 3rd Eastern Front, the respected and loved military officer, and politician. The creator of “La Lupe”. Commander of the Revolution Juan Almeida Bosque.”

Almeida, who was born into an extremely humble family, was one of the attackers on the Moncada Barracks, in Santiago de Cuba, on July 26, 1953, led by the then-young lawyer Fidel Castro.

He was one of the 82 expedition members on the Granma yacht and distinguished himself within the troop until he was promoted to the rank of commander of the Rebel Army and founded the 3rd Mario Muñoz Guerrilla Front, whose actions were decisive for the revolutionary triumph, and after the victory from January 1, 1959, he held important political and military responsibilities.

At the same time, he stood out for his great artistic sensitivity which led him to compose more than 300 songs and write a dozen books of a marked testimonial nature.

When he died on September 11, 2009, he was a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and vice president of the Council of State. (Source: Prensa Latina).
