Havana, January 28 (RHC)-- January 28th marks a new anniversary of the birth of Cuban national hero José Martí –the 168th anniversary this year and Cubans are paying homage to the Apostle of Cuban Independence in the most diverse ways, mostly over the internet, on social media, due to the epidemiological situation generated by Covid-19.

The Cuba chapter of the Network in Defense of Humanity and the Cuban Ministry of Culture organized the concert Te doy una canción…, broadcast on StreamingCuba, and featuring Trova musicians from Cuba and Latin America.

The main activity to commemorate the date took place at the José Martí Studies Center, with intellectual Eduardo Torres-Cuevas, director of the José Martí Office and president of the José Martí Cultural Society reflecting on the essay Nuestra America (Our America) written by Martí and published 130 years ago.

Likewise, the traditional Torchlight March, staged by Cuban university students every year on the eve of Martí’s birthday anniversary, took place online, this time. Young Cubans also posted videos, photos, and messages on social media as a tribute to the most universal of all Cubans.

For its part, the José Martí Youth Movement and the José Martí Cultural Society hosted debates, forums, colloquiums, workshops, contests and exhibitions, also on social media, to reflect on José Martí’s life, work, and the validity of his ideas in today’s world and to celebrate his 168th birthday anniversary.
