Cuba remembers Ñico Rojas on his 100th birthday anniversary

Havana, July 21 (RHC)-- August 3rd, 2021, will mark the 100th birthday anniversary of Cuban guitarist and composer José Antonio Rojas –better known as Ñico Rojas. On the occasion, several cultural institutions have joined forces to pay tribute to this legend of Cuban music and culture, in general.

At a press conference in Havana, Madelaine Masses Baldivares, director of the Center for Music Research and Development, said the program of activities includes audiovisuals with other renowned Cuban musicians Beatriz Márquez, Bárbara Llanes and Rolando Luna, among others, performing works written by Ñico Rojas.

In that sense, two pre-recorded concerts will be broadcast on Canal Clave of Cuban television on August 3rd and 6th.

Liety Ramos, a musicologist with the National Music Museum announced the launching of two titles ‘Ñico Rojas’, by Ivón Peñalver; and ‘Obras para guitarra’ (a compilation by Martín Pedreira of music scores for guitar by Ñico Rojas).

An award-winning artist, Ñico Rojas is considered one of the pioneers of Cuba’s filin song movement. He was granted Cuba’s Félix Varela and Alejo Carpentier Orders, as well as the National Culture Distinction.
