Cuba adds five more bronze medals in weightlifting qualifiers

Havana, April 22 (RHC)-- Cuba added five more bronze medals on Friday in the penultimate day of the weightlifting qualifying championship, which takes place in the Dominican Republic with a view to the Central American Games San Salvador 2023.

The president of the Cuban Weightlifting Federation, Jorge Luis Barcelán, told Prensa Latina that Orielvis Begue won the bronze medal in the 96 kilograms (kg) division by lifting 160 kg in the snatch exercise.

Begue placed fourth in the repulsion exercise with 194 kg and won bronze in the biathlon with 354 kg, Barcelán said from the Punta del Este sports complex in Santo Domingo.

The executive commented that Juan Columbié, in the 109 kilograms category, won three bronze medals by lifting 165 kg in the snatch exercise; 192 kg in the repulsion exercise and 357 kg in the biathlon.

On Friday, the men's performance concluded with a total of 13 medals for Cuba, including four gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.

Cuba will try to add new medals today in the last day of competitions, when they go up to the platform: Ayamey Medina in the 81 kilograms (kg) category, Elizabeth Reyes in the 87 kg, and Marifelix Sarría in the over 87 kg category.
