Paris, June 1 (PL) Tennis players Tommy Paul of the United States and Elina Svitólina of Ukraine won their respective matches today, advancing to the quarterfinals of the French Open (Roland Garros), the second Grand Slam of the season.
The American, ranked 12th in the world, defeated Australia's Alexei Popyrin (25) with a triple set score of 6-3, while the Ukrainian (14) surprised by beating Italy's Jasmine Paolini —ranked fourth in the world— with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), and 6-1.
Paul, bronze medalist in doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will face the winner of today's match between his compatriot Ben Shelton and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, ranked second in the world.
Meanwhile, Svitólina, Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo 2020, will compete for a spot in the semifinals against the winner of the match between Poland's Iga Swiatek and Kazakhstan's Yelena Rybákina.
