Havana, July 13 (RHC) - Cuban Seily Mendoza won the silver medal in epee during the Central American and Caribbean Fencing Championship 2025, which is being held in Guatemala City and will begin today the team competitions.
The two-time Central Caribbean queen in Veracruz 2014 and Barranquilla 2018 won in three bouts before falling in the final 11-15 to Venezuelan Lizze Asis, bronze medalist in Lima 2019.
Cuba closed the individual segment with three medals: in addition to Mendoza's silver, Daniel Carrion (epee) and Rosalia Vargas (sabre) won bronze. The performance reaffirms the level of the Cubans in the region.
The competition, which continues until next Tuesday at the Erick Barrondo Sports Center, started this Sunday the team phase with duels in women's foil and men's epee.
The seven best teams by weapon and gender will obtain a direct quota for the Central American and Caribbean Games of Santo Domingo 2026. The Dominican Republic, as host country, has already secured its participation.
The two best fencers in each individual event will also qualify, if their teams are not among the top seven teams.
The team competition will continue on Monday with foil (M) and sabre (F), and will close on Tuesday with epee (F) and sabre (M).
