Guatemala City, September 13 (RHC)-- The president elect of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, has temporarily suspended the transition process with the current government of Alejandro Giammattei, after the new actions of the Public Ministry against the elections of June 25.

Bernardo Arévalo indicated that the decision to suspend the transition process is due to the situation provoked by the Public Prosecutor's Office, until the political conditions necessary for the transfer of power are reestablished.

In a press conference, the president-elect requested the resignation of the Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, whom he had already accused on September 1st of carrying out a coup d'état against him.

Bernardo Arévalo added that he sees a contradiction when he realizes that Guatemalan State institutions are taking actions against him, despite the fact that he has been proclaimed by the electoral authorities as the winner of the elections.

The declarations of the president elect come after the Attorney General's Office raided the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) and opened boxes with votes, despite the refusal of the electoral entity of the Central American country.

In view of these facts, Bernardo Arevalo also demanded the resignation of the prosecutors Rafael Curruchiche and Cinthia Monterroso, as well as the criminal judge Fredy Orellana, who approved the raid.

The persecution of the Prosecutor's Office against the now president elect and his party, the Seed Movement, began three weeks after Bernardo Arevalo advanced to the ballot, when polls placed him in seventh place.

"I urge all state institutions and officials not to lend themselves to these arbitrariness and that according to what is expressed in Article 156 of our Constitution, no public official or employee, civilian or military, is obliged to comply with manifestly illegal orders", concluded Bernardo Arevalo.
