Bolivian Government Minister Eduardo Del Castillo

La Paz, May 17 (RHC)-- The ruling Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party has designated Government Minister Eduardo Del Castillo as its presidential candidate for the general elections on August 17th, along with Milán Berna as its vice-presidential candidate, following the decline of Bolivian President Luis Arce's reelection bid.

The confirmation of Eduardo Del Castillo, current Minister of Government, and Milan Berna, leader of the Single Trade Union Confederation of Bolivian Peasant Workers, was announced on Friday by Grover García, president of the MAS (Mass Workers' Party).

"We have here our brother Eduardo Del Castillo and Milan Berna, candidates who will determinedly strengthen democracy," declared the party leader.

The alliance between the minister and the peasant leader is presented as the ideal option to represent "the social organizations and unions" that constitute the base of the ruling party.  "Victory is assured," he added, after Arce was ruled out.

Over the past week, MAS party leaders met with President Luis Arce to discuss possible candidates.

According to the established schedule, the registration period for candidates is open from May 14th to the 19th, while the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) will approve candidates until the following June 6th.
