The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, died on January 11, 2022.

Brussels, January 11 (RHC) Cuba's ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Yaira Jimenez, regretted today the death of the president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, who died in the early morning hours due to complications of the immune system.

"I share the heartfelt messages of condolences at the death early this morning of the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli," she wrote on her Twitter account.

The diplomat highlighted in her message on the social network that the esplanade of the European Parliament in Brussels gathered hundreds of people to recognize his work.

Sassoli was 65 years old and had been admitted since December 26 to Aviano hospital in Italy for a severe complication of his immune system.

For the first time, a high EU authority dies in the exercise of his office, which he had held since 2019.
