Traffic accidents increase in Cuba

Havana, Jun 9 (RHC)--The number of traffic accidents and their dangerousness increased in Cuba between January and May compared to the same period in 2020 and 2021, Granma newspaper reported.

Colonel Mario Ríos Labrada, head of the Department of Vehicle Registration of the National Traffic Department of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), said that during the period, there were an average of 27 accidents per day with two deaths and 30 injuries.

In a press conference, the official added that the dangerousness of these accidents increased since there was a death in every 14 of them.

According to statistics collected in the first five months of the year, four thousand 62 traffic crashes were reported, representing growth compared to 2020 and 2021.

Among Cuba's 15 provinces,  Holguín and Camagüey, in the eastern region, accumulate the highest number of victims and an average number of deaths per accident.

Likewise, Ríos Labrada stressed that the human factor determines 89 percent of these accidents since among the leading causes are not taking control of the vehicle, violating the right of way, speeding, technical malfunctions, and drunk driving.
