Havana, September 9 (RHC)-- Cuba on Friday congratulated the people and Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on the occasion of its National Day.

On Twitter, the Cuban Foreign Ministry ratified the island's authorities' willingness to continue strengthening the historical ties of friendship and cooperation between both nations.

Havana and Pyongyang recently celebrated 62 years of diplomatic relations, which began on August 29, 1960, and are characterized by mutual solidarity and cooperation.

The historic leaders Fidel Castro, from Cuba, and Kim Il Sung, from the DPRK, promoted the establishment of ties, transcending the political and governmental scene to extend to the two peoples.

In the framework of the commemoration, Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes highlighted the ties of friendship, cooperation and solidarity between the two countries, which hold the flag of socialism high, despite unilateral measures that hinder their development.

On September 9, 1948, the People's Assembly proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Korea in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, and Kim Il Sung was appointed prime minister.
