Holguín, Dec 17 (RHC) Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba and deputy to the National Assembly for the locality of Gibara, attended the constitution of the Municipal Assembly of People's Power in that territory, thus beginning the 18th term of office.

Andrés Gómez Segura, president of the Municipal Electoral Council, said during the solemn ceremony that the body is represented by 98 delegates, including all social sectors without distinction of race, sex, or educational level.

He also ratified the commitment to administer the life of the municipality during the next five years and to apply the laws in force in the Caribbean nation.

As part of the constitutive session, Andrés Joaquín Ricardo Rivas and Sonia Adelaida Chacón were elected president and vice-president by secret and direct vote.

During the day, tribute was also paid, through floral offerings, to the National Hero José Martí and the Bronze Titan Antonio Maceo, fighters for the independence of the Greater Antilles.

Manuel Marrero Cruz described the session as an expression of democracy and stressed the role of the delegates in accompanying the problems of the population and their gradual solution, based on the government's policy of strengthening ties with the community. (Source: ACN)
