Havana, July  19 (RHC)-- Cubans and Nicaraguans celebrated Wednesday the 44th anniversary of the triumph of the Popular Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua, with a political-cultural event in which representatives of other nations also participated.

At the Casa de las Tejas Verdes (House of Green Gables) in Havana, the attendees recalled the deed that constituted the third armed revolution of the 20th century in Latin America, after the Mexican (1910) and Cuban (1959).

The vice-president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Víctor Gaute affirmed in the meeting that "this is a day of joy and victory also for the inhabitants of this Caribbean country, united with the Nicaraguan people in the purpose of building a just society in the midst of the aggressiveness of the United States".

The official recalled that the Sandinista Revolution synthesized the ideals of several generations of patriots, and made it possible to wage colossal and successful battles against ignorance, poverty and for the right to sovereignty and self-determination of the Central American nation.

For his part, the Nicaraguan ambassador to Cuba, Alejandro Solis, highlighted the progress made by his country in all areas during the last four decades.

Summarizing these efforts, he described them as an example of heroic resistance against the imperialist onslaught of successive U.S. governments.

Solis thanked the international solidarity towards Nicaragua, and reaffirmed the support to the battles for social justice in the world.

Prior to the event, participants laid a wreath before the statue of José Martí, Cuba's National Hero, in Havana's Central Park, in tribute to his liberating and Latin Americanist spirit.
