Cuba celebrates 50th anniversary of the Team of Translators and Interpreters

Havana, Oct 23 (RHC) Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez today remembered the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Translators and Interpreters Services Team (ESTI), through Agreement 306 of 1973 of the Council of Ministers of the Cuba.

In the ministry's X account, the head of Foreign Relations congratulated the ESTI group, created at the initiative of the leader of the revolution Fidel Castro, and recognized its professionalism, dynamism and valuable contribution to Cuban foreign policy.

According to the ESTI website, three years after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the scholarship system was created and the training of translators and interpreters began at the “Pablo Lafargue” Institute.

In that educational institution the first specialists in Russian, English, German, French and Czech were trained for a short period of time. Years later, translators and interpreters would begin to be trained in 13 languages.

The publication states that the Tricontinental Conference, in 1966, marked the beginning of conference interpretation services in Cuba and laid the foundations for the ESTI to be officially established on October 23, 1973. (Source: PL)
