Havana, January 28 (RHC)-- Cuban triple jumpers Liadagmis Povea and Leyanis Perez won gold and silver medals, respectively, at the World Athletics Indoor Tour gold medal event in Karlsruhe, Germany, on Friday.

Povea, the fifth-place finisher at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and third at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, went 14.64 meters (m) to beat her compatriot and achieve her personal best indoors, surpassing the 14.54 m achieved at the same event two years ago.

In what was the debut of both in the winter tour of the current year 2023, Perez, champion at the I Pan American Junior Games in Cali, Colombia, in 2021, and winner of the Ibero-American tournament last May in Alicante, Spain, finished second with 14.45 m, two centimeters away from her lifetime indoor best.

The 21-year-old, who finished fourth at the XVIII World Indoor Championships in Eugene, United States, last July, beat Ukraine's Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (14.41 m), who won the bronze medal, by four centimeters, according to the official website of World Athletics.

Bekh-Romanchuk, silver medalist in the indoor event in Belgrade, Serbia, in March last year, left off the podium the American Tori Franklin (14.39 m), owner of the bronze medal in the universal outdoor event in Eugene.

For the Cubans, this performance in Karlsruhe can be considered a good debut, with a view to a long season that will continue for them in the Mondeville meeting, France, on February 8.
