Colombia registers nearly 3,800 cases of police violence against protesters

Bogota, June 3 (RHC)-- The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Temblores revealed a report that registers 3,789 cases of violence perpetrated by the security forces against protesters, who have already spent 37 days deployed in the streets of Colombia.

According to the updated report that covers from April 28th (beginning of the strike) to May 31st, it outlines that of the cases of police violence, 1,248 are victims of physical violence, 1,649 arbitrary detentions, 705 violent interventions and 45 homicides allegedly perpetrated by members of the security forces. 

In addition, the Temblores document also points out 65 victims with eye injuries, 187 cases of gunshot wounds, 25 cases of sexual violence and six cases of gender-related violence.

The NGO reports the use of lethal weapons by agents of the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad (ESMAD) against protesters, "we recorded 20 cases of use of Venom weapon by the ESMAD, including in residential places, as well as horizontal firing of that weapon."
