London, August 28 (Prensa Latina-RHC)-- Sweden will begin talks with Ecuador about the case of Australian journalist Julian Assange on Monday, British journal The Guardian reported on Friday.

According to the journal, Sweden accepted Quito's proposal to carry out talks in order to address the stalemate over the Wikileaks founder, who claimed asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2012.

"It was a political decision to have this discussion" said Cecilia Riddselius, the Swedish justice ministry official responsible for the case. The negotiations would be complex, she said, and it was impossible to say how long they might take.

Assange faces sexual assault accusations which he denies and affirms that they are a trick to achieve his extradition to Sweden, which would then deliver him to U.S. authorities.

The United States is after the Australian after Wikileaks published thousands of confidential documents compromising Washington and showing the violations committed during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
