"Gabriela Mistral in Cuba: A Book for Chileans and Cubans."
A historical investigation into the stays of Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral in Cuba, is presented by Luis Aguilera González, an intellectual who resides in La Serena, the capital of Chile's coastal Coquimbo region.
The book compiles the results of these inquiries and will be unveiled for the first time on June 18 at the Gabriela Mistral Regional Library in La Serena, following earlier presentations in the Cuban provinces of Camagüey and Pinar del Río.
In an interview with Radio Havana Cuba, the author noted that the Nobel Prize–winning writer visited the Caribbean island in 1922, 1931, 1938, and 1953, after receiving her award at Stockholm’s Concert Hall on December 10, 1945.
"This book contains important background information on all of Gabriela Mistral's activities during her four visits, including many new and previously unpublished details," Aguilera said. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to present the work at the 33rd Havana International Book Fair, which will be held in February and March 2025.
He also revealed that he is preparing a similar book about the travels of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda to Cuba, which included three visits: "In 1942, then again in 1949 for 24 hours during a technical stopover on a flight from Europe. He took the chance to meet with local authorities and intellectuals, and he even gave a few lectures that same day. Finally, he visited in 1960, arriving at the end of December and staying into January 1961,” Aguilera explained.
He expressed great satisfaction with the outcome of his research and said he was thrilled to share it with both Cuban and Chilean audiences.
