Cuban prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso

Havana, May 5 (RHC)-- A series of gala performances will take place in Spain from May 7th through June 6th as tribute to Cuban prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, on her 100th birthday anniversary.

A press release by Ballet Nacional de Cuba –the flagship Cuban dance company founded and directed by Alicia—explains that homage-paying activities will be held in 15 cities across Spain, notably Madrid, Alicante, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Cádiz, Córdoba and Málaga.

Cuban and foreign ballet dancers will share on stage in honor of the legendary classical ballet figure. The cast includes Anette Delgado and Dani Hernández, principal dancers with Ballet Nacional de Cuba, also Cuban dancer Ginett Moncho, who will dance with Alexis Tutunnique, principal dancer of Kiev Ballet and Carla Vincelli, principal dancer of Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as Javier Torres, lead dancer with Northern Ballet in Britain, Spaniard Eva Nazaret, Cuban dancer Javier Moniern, and Oriana Plaza, lead dancer of  Ballet Municipal de Lima, Peru, and Cuban Maynard Miranda, lead dancer of Sibiu Ballet Theatre in Romania.

The program includes a selection of emblematic ballets danced by Alicia Alonso, like Giselle, Carmen, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Spartacus and Diva.

The Spanish tour was to take place originally around December 21st, 2020 --Alicia Alonso’s birthday anniversary, but it had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ballet Nacional de Cuba thanked the dancers and the Cuban and Spanish institutions involved in this tribute to Alicia.
