New book on Alicia Alonso

A new book entitled "Alicia y las maravillas del Ballet. Revisitaciones desde la artisticidad," reveals previously unpublished photos of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso. The work of photographer Jorge Valiente and journalist Sahily Tabares, it was launched January 18th at the Havana headquarters of the National Association of Writers and Artists (UNEAC).

The preface was written by writer and essayist Rafael Acosta, who highlights that the text perfectly combines creative images with their artistic interpretation.

Acosta underscored the significance of the photos, taken during a special performance by Alicia as tribute to Cuban soldiers, stationed near the illegal US Naval Base in Guantánamo. On that occasion, she danced on the bed of a military truck.

Numerous actions are developed in Cuba and around the world to celebrate and honor the legacy of Alicia. These include book launches, exhibitions, photography contests, audiovisual presentations and community work.

The winner of more than 200 international prizes, Alicia Alonso died in 2019. A symbol of both, excellence and perseverance, she has become a permanent source of inspiration in Cuba and around the world.
