Cuba's Minister of Justice, Oscar Silvera.

Havana, November 18 (RHC)—The proposed Family Code of Cuba is thorough, modern, and robust, respectful of the Constitution of the Republic and the international treaties signed by the Caribbean island, the Minister of Justice, Oscar Silvera said.

Speaking on the television program Mesa Redonda (Round Table), the minister stressed that the Code's draft is already available on the website of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (Parliament) - after specialized consultations throughout the country, in which more than 4,800 opinions were gathered from experts and the population.

On the TV program, the vice-president of the National Union of Jurists of Cuba, Dr. Yamila González, spoke of the need for people to know and study more about a project "that does not impose models, does not take away the rights of individuals and families to recognize them to others, and has a comprehensive capacity to solve family conflicts".

After its study by institutions, organizations, and scientific societies the text of the Code will be submitted to the  National Assembly for its analysis and subsequent submission to a popular referendum.
