Díaz-Canel highlights Cuba's achievements in Central Caribbean sports event

Havana, July 4 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Tuesday highlighted recent results of Cuba's athletes, who won gold medals in the women's handball, men's volleyball, shooting and fencing competitions at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Sports Games of San Salvador 2023.

Through Twitter, the also First Secretary of the Party's Central Committee pondered the courage of Cuban athletes, and affirmed that the national anthem continues to be heard at the sports event.

"The national anthem continues to be heard in #SanSalvador2023. Unforgettable the handball players taking the victory in overtime, men's volleyball undefeated and settling a debt of 25 years, shooting and fencing filling us again with glory. What courage our athletes have!" he wrote.


He underscored the victory of the handball team, which brought the first collective sports title for Cuba in the Central American Games, when on Thursday night it defeated the Puerto Rican women 29 goals to 28 in overtime.

The President also distinguished the men's volleyball team, which, undefeated in San Salvador 2023, won the gold medal this Sunday after sweeping the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-17, 25-17 and 25-22).

Likewise, on Monday, Jorge Félix Álvarez won the gold medal in the 25-meter rapid fire pistol, and Leidis Veranes climbed to the top of the podium in the individual sabre event.
