Aryna Sabalenka
Paris, Jun 5 (RHC) Today, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, world number one, defeated Poland's Iga Swiatek 2-1 and advanced for the first time to the final of the French Open (Roland Garros), the second Grand Slam of the season.
With an aggressive game and an imposing serve, the Tigress of Minsk imposed her law on the clay of the Philippe Chatrier with scores of 7-6 (7/1), 4-6 and 6-0 to cut the streak of the defending champion, who had won four of the last five editions of the tournament.
Sabalenka dominated with a 65 percent effectiveness in her first serve, scored three straight sets and converted eight of 10 break points, showing her best version on a surface that until today seemed to be the exclusive territory of her rival.
Swiatek, bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and former world number one (currently five), arrived with a historic dominance over her opponent (8-4 in previous duels), but could not resist the pressure of an opponent who had not given up a single set in the tournament.
The Belarusian will seek her first French Open title this Saturday, the only one of the four majors still missing in her cabinet, which already has 20 WTA titles, including three Grand Slams in singles and two in doubles.
