Coco Gauff
Paris, Jun 5 (RHC) Today, American Coco Gauff swept France's Lois Boisson and advanced to the final of the French Open (Roland Garros), the second Grand Slam of the professional tennis calendar.
The young woman from Atlanta, ranked number two in the world, won with authority on the Philippe Chatrier court, before an audience divided between admiration for the quality of her tennis and patriotic fervor towards Boisson; the unexpected local heroine ranked 361st in the ranking.
With her usual athletic display and aggressiveness from the back of the court, Gauff controlled the match from the start, backed by a 63 percent effective first serve and taking six of seven break points, which allowed her to defeat the hostess 6-1 and 6-2.
Boisson, 21 years old and beneficiary of an invitation to the tournament, had just surprised two favorites -Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva- and arrived with the energy of an entire country pushing their dreams, but she could do little against the gale of an already established player.
For Gauff, champion of the US Open in 2023 and finalist this year in Madrid and Rome, today was her third victory in the semifinals of a Grand Slam, and will now seek her second title in this category against the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.
