Havana, June 1 (RHC)—Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed on Twitter Friday his solidarity with his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, after the announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump that he would be imposing an escalating tax on imports from Mexico.

Trump said Thursday that on June 10th the US will impose a 5% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico, until the flow of illegal migrants into the US fully stop, and that unless the illegal immigration problem is remedied, the tariffs will continue to rise monthly, going as high as 25 % by October 1st.

Diaz Canel said that Cuba stands in solidarity with Mexico upon the announcement of the coercive, discriminatory and arbitrary measure.

“Our friendship and support.  We are sons of America.  To her belongs our duty,” he said.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez also expressed on Twitter his strong rejection of the new measure, inspired by the Monroe Doctrine.

“Poverty is the cause of migration, and its solution is cooperation for development.  All of Cuba’s solidarity with Mexico,” he said.
