Havana, January 7 (RHC)-- The temporary working group for the prevention and control of the new coronavirus, headed Thursday by Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, evaluated the current epidemiological situation in the country and exchanged with authorities from all provinces and the special municipality of the Isle of Youth.

The number of new patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Cuba during the last 14 days is 5,219. One thousand 429 of them corresponded to people reported on Wednesday, which means an increase of 47.8% of cases compared to the previous day.

This increase has been maintained throughout the national territory in the last two weeks, assured the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda.

Since October 24 -- the minister said-- when 1,210 new infections were reported, the figure of 1,000 positive cases in one day had not been exceeded in the country.

He also recalled that active cases had decreased in October, November, and December. On December 13, 312 people were admitted to medical institutions; the lowest figure recorded after the peak of the epidemic experienced last August.

After practically three months of this trend, he emphasized that this Thursday, a total of 3,803 COVID patients were admitted, representing 998 more people than the previous day.

"The number of daily confirmed cases should continue to increase at an accelerated rate in the coming days," the Minister of Public Health assured.

"This is what has happened with the circulation of the Omicron variant in the world. We are not oblivious to that reality. Although the moment is different for Cuba, since the vast majority of our population is vaccinated against the virus, and many have already received their booster dose, this cannot generate any confidence in us," he stressed.

Considering this vertiginous increase in daily cases,  the Prime Minister reiterated the Cuban government's call for there not to be the slightest trace of confidence in the actions taken in the different territories.
