Gibara International Film Festival will return in Cuba

Havana, July 10 (RHC) The Gibara International Film Festival will return from August 1 to 5, held in that city in the Cuban eastern province of Holguín.

As a novelty, the Lucía de Honor Award will be delivered to the Cuban actor, producer and filmmaker Jorge Perugorría, who presided the contest from 2016 to 2022.

Perugorría, who from this 17th edition becomes its Honorary President, was a key figure in the relaunch and resuscitation of the Festival, significantly since 2019, during the health crisis associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gender issues will have a special presence this year and will be addressed in the theoretical event, exhibitions, plays and other activities.

According to the organizers, the outdoor projections will return in the so-called Villa Blanca de Cuba, a sample of the historic link between the community and the seventh art.

In two nightly sessions, films that are part of the official selection will be shown, thanks to a giant screen provided by the Havana Film Festival and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Likewise, musical shows will be held every night, a regular practice that is resumed to guarantee interaction between the inhabitants of Gibara and the audience. A special tribute to Nueva Trova will also be held.

In the presence of its director Sergio Benvenuto, the meeting led to the debate on a festival that stimulates film creation with low budgets as an initiative of its founder, the Cuban filmmaker, producer and screenwriter Humberto Solás, who died in 2009. (Source: PL)
