Havana, December 7 (RHC)-- Indomitable baseball player Santiago Torres Baena signed today a contract with the team Los Federales de Chiriqui, to play in the Professional Baseball League of Panama, better known as Probeis.

Reigning champion of the sport of balls and strikes in the Canal country, the team will employ the second baseman from Santiago, apparently from the next play date on the 10th.

"Professor Alfonso Urquiola, who manages Chiriqui, has communicated with me and everything indicates that if I do teamwork I will be in play from the opening day," the player of the Avispas santiagueras told JIT.

"I have been training hard and I feel in perfect sporting shape," he argued.

"My goal there is to play well, represent Cuba with dignity and grow in baseball," he said after signing the contract with Yadira González Ruiz, general manager of Cubadeportes S.A. and the player's representative before the Isthmian franchise, and Yosvani Aragón, vice president of the Cuban Baseball Federation.

The talented 26-year-old player, who will travel tomorrow to Panama City, has been in seven National Series, in which he is batting .311 (1012-315) with 53 doubles, 15 triples and 21 home runs. As a result, he has accumulated 125 RBIs and 220 runs scored.

In the 60 Series he averaged .363 with 13 home runs, 56 RBIs and 81 runs scored, his best performance in a season.

The Federales de Chiriquí hold 16 national titles, since their foundation in 1945. Led by the legendary Pinar del Río mentor Alfonso Urquiola, they recently won the National Senior Baseball Championship, Copa Caliente.
