Havana, Jun 28 (RHC) - The Cuban women's team won both of their games on the opening day of the 11th Pan American Softball Championship, which is being held in Montería, Colombia.
At the Luis Escobar Pocaterra Stadium, the Caribbean team once again relied on their pitching, their best weapon, and timely batting.
Early in the day, coach Jorge Lamas's players narrowly defeated (1-0) the United States Virgin Islands team, with an outstanding performance from Granma left-hander Yilian Tornés, who engaged in an excellent duel against Hope Trautwein.
Tornés struck out 15 opponents with just one hit allowed by the infield, while her teammates struck out eight times against Trautwein, who allowed four hits.
But of that quartet, three came in the seventh inning, including Rosangela Jardines' decisive hit with runners on second and third, to drive in the winning run.
In the second game, the so-called Hormigas de Cuba broke loose at bat and defeated the Dominican Republic 7-2, also supported by the right arm of Yamelkis Guevara, who struck out 12 and allowed five hits in as many innings.
Anisley González came in to relieve her, pitching two complete innings, with one hit and one strikeout.
Ana Amalia González stood out at bat, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Lisaidy Samón hit a home run inside the park with a runner on base.
The Cubans will face Brazil on Saturday.
