Havana, Jul 2 (RHC) Today, the Cuban women's softball team participating in the 11th Pan American Championship being held in Monteria, Colombia, defeated Venezuela 1-0 to maintain its undefeated record in the Super Round.
The Cubans, with two games left to conclude this phase, have a record of six wins and no defeats and remain as the only undefeated team in the tournament.
This afternoon, on the clay of the Luis Escolar Pocaterra stadium, once again the experienced Yilián Tornés shined from the pitching circle, walking the entire route at a rate of 10 strikeouts to reach 50 in the championship and extend her unblemished streak to 28 chapters without allowing runs.
The challenge was decided in the seventh inning, when the disciples of professor Jorge Lamas, dominated by starter Loreley Francia, scored the run that left their rivals lying on the field.
A double by Leannelys Zayas and a golden hit by Yarianna Lopez combined for the victory.
The Cubans, who now have their sights set on a place on the podium, have already achieved their goal in this competition, by taking one of the five slots for a World Cup phase and one of the six places available for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
Tomorrow they will close the Super Round with a double header, facing Puerto Rico and Canada, two of the favorite teams to fight for the medals.
