Paris, June 22 (RHC) - On Thursday, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay received Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel in the capital for a meeting to discuss the strong ties between Cuba and the organization and their mutual desire to promote them.

The visiting president expressed feeling at home in the multilateral organization's headquarters and thanked Azoulay for the opportunity to be there. This meeting follows previous encounters between the two in Havana in December 2019 during an official visit by Azoulay, and in November 2018 when Díaz-Canel transited through France.

The meeting took place in the context of Díaz-Canel's attendance at the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact being held in Paris. UNESCO and Cuba celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in August 2020, which Díaz-Canel used to highlight shared values and to thank the multilateral organization for its support in the fight against the U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade.

Azoulay praised the strong friendship between UNESCO and Cuba, describing their cooperation as vibrant, with a particular emphasis on the education sector. In addition to meeting with Azoulay, Díaz-Canel also held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as part of his activities in France. (Source: PL)
