Cuba calls at the UN for a ceasefire in Gaza and respect for the lives of civilians

Havana, Oct 25 (RHC) Cuba condemned the murder of innocent civilians in all parties involved in the conflict in the Middle East and called for a ceasefire from the UN Security Council.

The island's First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gerardo Peñalver, called for the urgent mobilization of humanitarian aid to address the situation in Gaza, which he described as catastrophic.

The also permanent representative of Cuba before the organization called for an end to double standards, selectivity and political manipulation that violate the cause of international peace and security.

Peñalver expressed deep concern about the escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine, a consequence of decades of Israeli practices of illegal occupation and colonization, in violation of the rights of Palestinians in their own territory.

At the same time, he warned of the prolonged disrespect for the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and International Law, including numerous relevant UN resolutions.

The Cuban diplomat condemned the murders of civilians, especially women, children and UN humanitarian workers, as well as the indiscriminate bombings against the population in Gaza and the destruction of homes, hospitals and civilian infrastructure.

Likewise, he denounced the deprivation of water, food, electricity and fuel services to the population, which considerably worsens the already precarious humanitarian situation after Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In that sense, he rejected the complicity of the United States Government with Israel by obstructing the action of the Security Council regarding the Palestinian question, which undermines peace and stability in the Middle East.

Peñalver remarked that the United States has vetoed 46 resolutions in the Council related to the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, the most recent just a few days ago.

He emphasized that Cuba advocates the search for a prompt solution through negotiation, which stops this escalation of violence and its very serious humanitarian consequences. (Source: PL)
